The title came up while reading this on Wikipedia:
The Middle Ages were truly the Dark Ages for cats. Condemned as symbols of paganism, witches' familiars, and agents of Satan, cats were persecuted and nearly wiped out by the fifteenth century. The extermination of cats undoubtedly helped rats spread the murderous Black Death, the plague that killed 25 million Europeans, one-fourth of the population between 1347 and 1351. Under orders from Pope Innocent VIII, the Spanish Inquisition burned thousands of cats at the stake due to cats' condemnation as evil. During this period, literally hundreds of thousands of cats were tortured, hung, burned at the stake, roasted alive, or killed outright on sight. So great was this persecution that the population of European cats dwindled to less than ten per cent of its pre- inquisitional number. Paradoxically, the black cat is looking for protection in a Christian graveyard... Inspired by the contest 'Hiding Cats' held at ~KittyCatCult 2nd Place Winner in the 'Hiding Cats' contest! Nice image and concept, goes well with the description. It's so sad, what you wrote that is
Kitty has nice eyes -- Before you critisize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes. [Take a walk to my gallery] I've heard of that. One account I read said the residents of one town collected hundreds of cats in a big wicker basket and burned them alive. As a warm-up to the "main event" of the burning of suspected witches, and heretics.
Considering how my cat screams if I accidentally step on a paw, can you imagine how terrified those poor kitties were? Any townspeople not affected most likely rationalized it as the screaming of demons. -- The emperor is - displeased. The cats revenge was when the Black Death tore through Europe, killing between 33% to 66% of the population. And many of the plagues were carried by, <drum roll> rats, who did not have their natural enemy, the cat there to stop them. This decimated the Catholic Church, first because many of the priests died trying to help the suffering and secondly, because they could not cure the disease or stop its spread.
-- Angels danced with joy on the day you were born. In other words, human beings were the main cause of their own suffering and death... stupidity, ignorance and superstition and maybe the worst things on earth.
And it's rather sad that the "positive side" of the history was that cats had a sort of revenge... -- Jede Katze ist ein Meisterwerk - Leonardo Da Vinci 私は日本語を勉強します。 I eat art thieves with Nutella. |
