Hummingbird Moth is a general common term applied to many moths in the Sphingidae family and Hemaris genus that are distinguished among moths for their rapid flying and midair hovering ability that resembles that of hummingbirds while they feed on nectar from flowers. There are more than 1,400 species of these moths worldwide, also called clearwing moths, sphinx moths, hawk moths, bee-hawk moths, and hornworms (especially when in the caterpillar stage).
